Chapter Ten

JAX SAT BESIDE CHANCE on the other side of Mrs. Macguire’s desk. “So currently you have no qualified interpreter?”

Chance covered Jax’s hand with hers. “There has to be a solution.”

Mrs. Macguire took off her glasses and tossed them on the desk. “Our kindergarten was four hours last year and he had an interpreter as per his Individual Education Plan. the Individual with Disabilities Education Act requires that we accommodate students with needs. The kids were only doing four-hour days last year. This year, it will be a full school day. I’ve put in a request for a full-time tutor interpreter. I’ve yet to hear whether we’ve found a qualified applicant.”

Jax sat up straighter. “School starts soon. What is he supposed to do if we can’t find one? Sit in a corner and color while he falls farther and farther behind? The deck is already so stacked against him as it is.”

“Mrs. Fitzsimmons, I share your outrage. Without question, I’m looking for specialized teachers to provide assistance to my students with need.

Chance stood and began to pace. “What if we found an interpreter that could help him strengthen his ability to communicate and tutor him? Would that be allowed?”

Mrs. Macguire turned to her computer and began typing. “If the individual is qualified, she’d be a candidate for a full-time position here.”

Chance’s gun belt creaked as she shifted from foot to foot. “When I first met Hunter, we started taking some basic sign-language classes from a woman who may be able to do it or know someone who can. We also have feeler emails out to recent graduates that my wife is waiting to hear back about.” She leaned forward. “In a few days, Hunter has an appointment to have his hearing loss evaluated. We’re working on hearing aids. We have little information as to why he doesn’t already have some.”

Jax’s stomach was turning. She stared blankly at the cinderblock walls of the office. The cream-colored background was as washed out as she felt. How could there be so few resources available to someone who would never have a chance without them? Not on my watch, and not to my son. “Mrs. Macguire, we’re going to do everything we can to help Hunter be happy and successful in life. I have little doubt that you’re going to be part of that plan. We can work together to make that happen.”

The principal clasped her hands on her desk. “Mrs. Fitzsimmons, my job is to make sure that every student succeeds, every single one. I’ll be Hunter’s advocate in every way. I put no student above another. I have an entire school full of children who have been born to addicts, some addicted themselves. I have an entire school full of children with any number of challenges.” She ticked them off. “Poverty, addiction, sexual molestation, physical abuse, mental abuse, and that’s just one hand. I have little doubt you’ve dealt with many of the parents, Sheriff. Hunter was among them, and it’s my understanding that only through a tragedy did he escape.
